ERGONOMICS
Ergonomics is the study of people in their workplace and is the process in which workplaces, products and systems are designed or rearranged so that they fit the people who use them. It aims to improve workspaces and environments to reduce the risk of injury.
Why is Ergonomics important?
- In the workplace, when the body is stressed by an awkward posture, extreme temperature, or repeated movement, the musculoskeletal system can be affected. Hence ergonomics plays a major role in reducing these work related injuries or illness like computer vision syndrome, neck and back pain, and carpal tunnel syndrome etc.
- To create safe, comfortable and productive workspaces by bringing human abilities and limitations into the design of a workspace, which includes the individual’s body size, strength, skill, speed, sensory abilities and attitudes.
- To make employees more comfortable and increase productivity.
What is the Outcome of an Ergonomic Assessment?
The outcome of an ergonomic assessment will include a report listing the recommendations the physiotherapist feels is appropriate. The report may also include:
- List of any replacement, additional or repairs to equipment that is necessary to improve the ergonomics
- Advising on any training the staff would benefit from e.g. machinery
- Recommendations to reduce the strain of repetitive tasks
- Recommendations to the staff on ways to improve their working postures
- Provide manual handling courses for the staff
- Positives which have been found in the workplace will also be documented
